What do you do when school holidays hit? You pack the car, grab the kids and head down south of course! Bunbury is the perfect place to spend a few days on your trip down to the South West with it’s reputation as a family friendly city. Here are the best things to do in Bunbury during the school holidays:
Looking for something that will have the kids learn while also out and about? Head on to the Dolphin Discovery Centre to learn more about their conservation efforts! Let them run through the interpretive centre and look at the variety of marine life on display in the aquariums, stay for the feeding and talk at the giant aquarium. Hop on a Dolphin Eco Cruise to learn more about the local dolphins, their feeding patterns and meet them in their local environment.
Kangaroo feeding at Bunbury Wildlife Park
The perfect school holiday activity, is there a better combination than children and animals? Grab some seeds from reception and have birds fly right to your hand to feed, or wait for feeding time at the kangaroo enclosure. The wildlife park is also home to two cheeky dingoes! Bring a picnic and make a day of it watching the kids run from enclosure to enclosure meeting the animals.
Home to the South West’s only saltwater taffy shop, the kids can stand and watch taffy being pulled and wrapped from the front of the shop! Strawberry, banana, passion fruit, and many more flavours of taffy are cooked in a big copper kettle, cooled. Watch as it’s placed on a specially made pulling machine where it is pulled till soft and glossy before going into their 1920’s taffy wrapping machine, where it’s cut into bite size pieces and wrapped in wax paper.
Indulge in the mouthwatering treats to be found in their shopfront, just remember to say hi to owner Sam while you’re there!
Bunbury in spring is a delightful time of year. Go on a hike and find the local wildflowers like Everlastings, Banksias, Grevilleas and Leschenaultia! As the weather starts to warm up, little ducklings chirp from the riverside and wildflowers peek their sunny heads out of the ground.
If you haven’t yet visited Gnomesville, be prepared to witness a very curious yet incredible sight. Gnomes as far as the eye can see are dotted across this little stretch, no one knows how Gnomesvilla came to be, but there are now over 5000 gnomes or various description living here. Take the afternoon and laugh with the kids at cheeky gnomes getting up to mischief, if you want to make a memory of it, grab a gnome, mark down your names and place your very own gnome down!
